Opis

Giant pothole originated on the street in front of 5624 Market Street and now extends to the sidewalk. The F and 88 bus travel on this street countless times a day and there is an inordinate amount of vehicle traffic on this street. This is an ADA issue as seniors and the disabled use this street to go and from the grocery store two structures away and to access the bus stops.

The City of Oakland Public Works Department has received this issue. It is registered as service request #681137. Thank you, in advance, for your patience as we work through a backlog of pothole service requests. Unfortunately the City does not have enough funding to repave all streets in poor condition. With limited funding, our response to resurfacing requests is limited to minor pavement and pothole repairs only. Our Street Maintenance Department will assess your street and determine whether temporary measures might be appropriate. Please understand that this work may be limited to pothole or other minor repairs, and that we have many similar requests. We will do our best to respond in a timely manner. The backlog of streets in Oakland needing pavement currently is $435 million and growing.

Cathy -- The picture you posted seems to show a missing water meter cover, not a pothole. Have you checked with EBMUD to see if they can replace the cover?

@NAParish The utility box cover is intact and was temporarily removed in Cathy's photo to measure the distance of the sinkhole from the sidewalk out to the street. Here is a photo with the utility box covered and the partial collapse of the sidewalk closest to the curb/street. The soil below the sidewalk has given way and slid into the sinkhole that is under the street on market. You can also see a crack in the cement in the street that is directly above the sinkhole.

Oh! That's a better picture of the problem. I would also suggest that Cathy edit the map so the pointer is at the location of the sinkhole, rather than on 57th Street, so the City can actually find the sinkhole.

In my opinion this one is not just a typical pothole in need to be fixed, but rather a time-bomb waiting to detonate that will not only cause the sidewalk to completely collapse, but also a vehicle to fall into the sinkhole under the Market street once street pavement above the sinkhole collapses.

Thank you Cathy. @COPW this issue is in fact a sinkhole that extends well into a highly trafficked city street and has already caused the partial collapse of the sidewalk. The City has taken absolutely no measures to temporarily address the safety concerns of this matter since it was originally reported back in the Fall of 2015 (request #603743). Instead a local contractor company voluntarily placed a piece of plywood over the collapse and a construction barricade to keep pedestrians from walking over the sinkhole. I understand there is a backlog of street repair but I also understand that due to the explosive housing market in Oakland there is a lot more property tax revenue being received. Perhaps an allocation to address dangerous sinkholes can somehow be made a priority.
